Soil Prep with Compost, Castings & Mulch

Feed your soil with 2 to 4 inches compost and 2 to 4 inches mulch, add worm castings ( ~10% volume of compost, if you can) to boost the soil food web. Video shows how easy it is to feed/maintain/prepare your garden bed. Took about 10 minutes to feed about 10 square feet of garden bed using the steps below.

  1. identify the area of the garden you want prepare
  2. get one to two bags of compost for every 10 square feet, reuse your mulch and/or get more
  3. remove the plants by cutting at the base of the stem, leave the roots for the fungi
  4. rake back the mulch, expose the soil
  5. spread 2 to 4 inches of compost on top of the soil
  6. water in the compost, dig in the compost to make sure it is completely saturated to the soil
  7. spread worm castings on top of the compost, no more than about 10% the volume of the compost
  8. water in the worm castings until water puddles on the surface
  9. cover the worm castings with 2 to 4 inches of mulch
  10. best to wait before planting, at least a day if you can, don’t work saturated compost or soil
